My red, pin-pricked face immediately after rolling.

Derma rolling is touted as better than fractional laser for repairing skin tone and tightness and at erasing scaring and wrinkles. I’m as vain as the next gal; I had to try it out. I’m in my forties and I am experiencing my first flush of wrinkles and zits to boot. I’ve always had great skin; so, to suddenly be ‘battling’ wrinkles and zits all at once can be exhausting.

I don’t believe in a lot of beauty treatments. I am anti-botox because I believe injecting your body with a known deadly toxin stimulates the immune system in ways we don’t fully comprehend and God only knows what autoimmune diseases might rear their ugly heads some time down the road.

I’m not set on fractional lasers either. While I believe they are safe, I don’t like that the laser burns pin prick scars all over your face, deep beneath the surface. I think eventually, the deep scar tissue might build up and your skin won’t look very good down the road. And not to mention, a single laser treatment in my city costs $4000.

Hence, I researched a more natural option for evening out my skin tone and stimulating more collagen. That’s when I discovered derma rolling.

I usually don’t blog about beauty treatments. But I’m gonna call this an ugly treatment. I believe that society’s issue isn’t with its beauty obsession, but rather, with its ugly aversion. If we would embrace the ugly, we’d all feel a whole lot better.

The pictures of me are not flattering. I have zero makeup on and a pin pricked face in the last one. I debated if I was brave enough to show the real me, warts and all, and ultimately I am. It’s rather liberating to expose parts of ones self they are insecure about. My recent battle with skin infections on my face left me feeling horrific. But showing my bare face on this blog doesn’t hurt me, it only makes me more confident–embracing the ugly.

So, let us begin our journey through derma-rolling.
*I do not recommend that anyone try this at home–sorry, you’re on your own! Derma roll at your own risk, my friends.

First of all, I purchased my roller from Amazon.com. It has needles that are 2.5 mm long (on the long side for home rolling, so I’ve been informed, but I’m not one to play around–I want results!).

I soak my roller in a water/Dettol mixture for a few hours. Then, I rinse the roller in fresh water and bow dry it.

I rub my face with alcohol on a cotton ball to clean it and I’m ready to roll!

I roll my entire face in a set pattern. Rolling in one direction = one roll. Rolling back in the oposite direction = 2 rolls. I roll each section of my face 4x in one direction. I roll my face in a total of four directions from start to finish. First, I roll side to side and then I go over the same area in a top to bottom direction. Thus, my face is rolled in these directions:

Side to Side

Up and Down in the other direction as though creating + like directional rolls over the face.

Diagonal in the other direction as though creating X like rolls across one’s face

After rolling the entire face is these 4 directions, it is time to wait for the results.

I then soak the roller in the cleansing solution, rinse, blow dry and store until next time.

My newly rolled face is red for only a few hours. I roll once a month maximum. New Collagen growth will continue to occur for over six months after a single treatment. I notice it really helps with evening out my skin tone and erasing any old scars left from the skin infection.

Yes, it hurts a little while you roll, but only enough to make the eyes water.

I can’t recommend anyone do this as I am not a beauty/ugly specialist. But it is working for me and I’ll keep at it once a month for awhile.
