The Slocan River is a glacial fed river that meanders through the pastoral, sparsely populated Slocan Valley.

A saunter along the Slocan River, and a swim in a secret swimming hole, make a weekend escape to the Kootenays a dog days of summer dream.

Follow along as we sink our feet into knee-deep, cool, Slocan mud and take a dip in the fresh, glacial waters of a hidden swimming hole.

The swimming hole is surprisingly deep; one cannot touch bottom after wandering only a few feet from shore.

Theresa, my sister, lives in the Kootenays and regularly visits the swimming hole with her three dogs. The dogs are as crazy in love with the secluded spot as we are!

Herman, the skipperke, heads into the river and swims full circles in the deepest section of the swimming hole. He repeats his swimming regime for about twenty minutes and will not exit the water until he’s good and ready!

My family was in desperate need of a weekend get away after surviving an entire summer of non-stop forest fires in the Okanagan, including a fire right on the mountain where we live.

The smoke has been so thick, that many weeks have been indoor-only days because breathing the air is not safe.

Although the Kootenays have their share of fires and smoke, the Slocan Valley is such a beautiful escape, that it is easy to forget our province is on fire, for a few blissful hours.

The fire situation in BC requires all of us, who love this province, to take action. We must encourage our governments to use the First Nations’ forest fire management model of small, controlled burns. Most importantly, we must do our part to slow global warming–support all government and businesses’ attempts to transition to solar/electric/wind energies.

Heading home—Roo, the dachshund, is plum tuckered-out from her river frolicking and begs to be carried, Theresa obliges.
