How to Host a Horror/Japanese Anime Party For Teens:

Slender (aka Kyran)

I caved…just a little. As I stated in my last post Happy Birthday, Welcome To The dark Side of 16, the horror-scavenger  hunt didn’t go as my daughter originally planned. But it did indeed go… with a few compromises.

After an initial video game of Slender (in our Retro Rumpus Room), the party of teenage girls hiked through the forest behind my home. They were guided by lantern light and were on the look out for Slender style clues on random trees (the route changed from the other side of our mountain, to the side behind our home– which, is a fairly calm path behind a block of homes–no cliffs). Also, instead of Slender stalking the group, we had him hide in the forest and wait. At the end of their hike he was waiting for them with his box if treasures. My nephew dressed up as the horror character Slender and braved the forest and about ten girls.

I prepared the girls ahead of time by instructing them that I was responsible for them as the adult supervising the party and that they all had to stay together no matter what.
If one needed/wanted to turn back, they all had to turn back together.

I drove Slender and the treasure chest to the end of our street where we could access a path to the forest. Our crew also included my youngest daughter Pip,she tagged along with Mom and cousin as no one was at our home to look after her (she wore her vampire dress for the occasion). We hiked as close to the spot my daughter had described to me as we could find (it was difficult to know which tree stump in the dark).

Mist sketched posters identical to these and placed them on trees in the forest behind our home.

While the girls admitted to being scared, no one panicked and it all went over without a hitch. The key to its success was: coaching the girls to stick together, the new, less-dangerous terrain route, Mist’s strategic placement of the clues, and having Slender waiting at the end (instead of stalking the girls).

After the hike, the girls returned home to Japanese food:

Miso soup
4 varieties of sushi roll
Raw veggie platter with dip
Vegetarian spring rolls and plum sauce.
Fruit Punch bowl.
*Coffee/Toffee ice cream cake.

* Recipe included in this post.

The final leg of the hike took them up the hill to the tree where Slender was waiting (and let forth a blood-curdling screech).

After supper, the girls had time for a guitar serenade by Slender (aka cousin Kyran).
Next, time to watch Battle Royale (Japanese thriller movie) followed by cake/presents and finally time for games before a few guests departed before midnight while other stayed for the sleep over.

Please continue to scroll down for a few of last night’s recipes and more photos of the event!

They were a brave crew (including Slender!).

Thank-You Slender! xx

The Birthday girl was the bravest. She was not afraid of Slender. And Slender turned out to have a heart full of kindness and promised to give up his dark side.

After the Slender surprise it was a short hike home again…
Kyran gave an impromptu guitar concert (Pip accompanied him on a few numbers) -note the Japanese lantern decorations.
