Let the Advent Calendar Count Down Begin!

posted in: Motherhood 2

Me age 5 or 6  (in the blonde braids, and navy coat) with my sisters Catherine (also on Santa’s knee) and Theresa (the only happy child in the pic!). Isn’t every child terrified of Santa? Edmonton, Alberta cica 1970’s.

My daughters love Christmas advent calendars. Who doesn’t? The Playmoblie variety were sold out (thanks to their Auntie Theresa–who knew the little smiling girl above was going to turn into a Playmoblie junkie?–my girls have a GIANT Playmoblie collection).

So what’s a mother to do?
Same as last year–I put together my own Barbie themed advent calendar. Basically, I wrap 24 days worth of Barbie accessories. I am a Barbie lover. It is true. I played with Barbies secretly until I was 15 and I still love to look at them today. So, shopping for Barbie stuff was secretly delightful 🙂
My daughters are also secret (some not so secret) Barbie enthusiasts too.
Pip is the most enthusiastic about the calender. This morning as I stumbled into the kitchen, there she was, happy as a lark. She announced, “We got bacon and eggs!” I thought that’s what she wanted for breakfast so I suggested (in my usual super-perky morning voice (; ) that I make some bacon up for her school lunch (some protein to munch on–it’s turkey bacon).
“No!” she said, “The Barbies got bacon and eggs!” She’d opened day two and discovered a wee-little plastic plate with lovely wee-little sunny side up eggs and two slices of (disturbingly blood-red) bacon (it looks like the Barbies still eat pork bacon).
Don’t you secretly wish that you live at my house and that you get to open surprise Barbie accessories all month? 😀

Yes, I do. But I’d be beating the girls to the calendar and hogging all of the accessories.
