The Doll Bed

When I was little, my mother and my grandfather combined their talents and created a spool doll bed for my sisters and I. My little bed had white bedding with red embroidered trim, as red was my favourite colour at that time (I believe I was 3 or 4).

The doll beds were exquisitely made with the loving hands of both my grandfather and mom. This included cutting a flat wood board (in which to attach the spool legs and lie the mattress on top of), staining and gluing dozens of wooden sewing spools, making a small foam mattress and then the bedding.

I treasured the doll bed for years and years through move after move ( I lived in 10+ different cities by the time I was 16 years old). Finally, the little bed fell apart and although I still have bits and pieces of the bed, for the most part it is gone.

Imagine my delight when my beautiful mom decided that she would attempt making the beds from scratch, all by herself, for her own granddaughters (one of them being my daughter Pippi).

The pictures in this post are of the stunning results of her labour. Pippi is a lucky girl to have doll bed made by her grandmother, just like the one I had as a little girl.

*Stay tuned to future posts as the doll bed plans will be available for purchase in the near future.
