Queensland Ancient Rainforests: Lamington National Park

I’ve saved the best for last! Lamginton rainforest hike is perhaps my favourite Queensland rainforest hike. The scale of the trees, intensity of the twisty vines and lush ferns, is transcendental. Lamington National Park is a two hour drive south of Brisbane.

Lamington forests are a part of the Gondwana rainforests. Gondwana rainforests are some of my favourite rainforests on Earth. The forests are ancient, left over from when the southern hemisphere (South America, Africa, Arabia, Madagascar, India, Australia, and Antarctica) were all  attached and part of the giant continent of Gondwana. They are a part of the Australian World Heritage protected areas. Some of Lamington’s plants are primitive and their species existed over 100 million years ago!

My family hiked Lamington early in the day, on a week day; thus, the trail was very quiet. We were thrilled to spy single adult, and mothers with their babes, forest wallabies on several occasions.

The scents of the rainforests are spectacular. At times, the forests are rich with spicy, woody mists and at other times, the distinct smell of wild koala makes me stop and scan the thick canopies for the owner of the musky-eucalyptus fragrance.

The pictures speak for themselves: being “lost” in the centre of the rainforest is paradise.
