Holes in Ears in Hawaii

posted in: Travel, U.S.A. 2

The pics are of Hapuna beach. The gang getting ready to snorkel, the kids on the beach and exploring an ocean side cave.
Yesterday we walked along the rugged coast line until we found a small private inlet and white sand beach–Mau’umae. The waves were beautiful and so many turtles (honu)swimming–very beautiful, off the beaten path and true Hawaii. We didn’t stay as long as we wanted as Pip developed unbelievable ear pain that we were unable to sooth. Peter drove up to a pharmacy in Waimea. I stayed on the beach with an inconsolable Pip. I did receive this tip for water in the ear from a Hawaiian mom whose kids are all surfers: take Hawaiian course clay salt (or course salt), heat on the stove and place in a sock. Hold the heated salt in sock to your ear. It will help draw out the water and sooth the ache.
On Peter’s return we left for home. Pip perked up and T and family arrived for supper: happy hour at a local bar/restaurant. It is popular to eat supper between 4-6 at the local restaurant as all the appetizers are $5 and drinks on special.
We went to bed and were awoken by an inconsolable Pip. Both ears were killing her. I gave her Motrin & Tylenol–nothing helped. She could not sleep. She just cried. Finally we decided to take her into emergency when we could NOT settle her for over an hour. We packed up Tabs at 1AM and drove up to Waimea to Northern Hawaii hospital. We were the only patients at this quiet, small hospital. The doctor discovered a red, inflamed right ear and a perforated ear drum in the left. That would account for the unbelievable pain. It must have ruptured on the plane landing–she was in a lot of pain. And then, she must have got sea water in the ears from boogie boarding and wave jumping. The hole in the ear drum would have really hurt with seawater touching it. So with antibiotics and tylenol with codeine, we drove back to the Waikoloa condo. On arrival at 3 AM Pip said, “I gonna pop.” I assumed her eardrum hurt again. But no, after she vomited all over the front hall and Peter, “I gonna pop,” suddenly became clear, “I gonna barf.” Peter thought it was the codeine, I thought perhaps the garlic/parmesan fries she had for supper. I put her in the tub and Peter and I attempted to clean up the damage. We finally made it into bed after 3AM. We were awoken again at 5 AM–she had to go potty and her ear hurt. Peter took her to the toilet, I gave her motrin and tucked her back in.
So there you have it. She is still asleep but I am up. I need to get her prescription filled today and get her cotton for her ears so she can play in the water without getting water in her ears.
So today: Mona Kea beach, the petroglyphs and a sleepy old Hawaiian town on the ocean : Hawi
If Pip is up for it.

Too bad, hope she recovers quickly. But what is a vacation w/o a trip to emerg and a bit of vomit?
