Onward to Kona

Pics are of Morning Fire Ranch, its avocado tree and the Hilo market.
Yesterday was a day spent in Kona, getting Pip’s antibiotic prescription filled and purchasing groceries. It seems the codeine was at fault (causing Pip to vomit). The antibiotics seem to have kicked in and Pip is doing much better. Her eyes were terribly blood shot all week I noticed, today is the first day they seem clear. The poor darling must have had a serious ear infection all week. I made my first real meal last night at the condo: Thai peanut chicken, rice noodles and a Hawaiian salad with papaya and avocado in it. Dessert of course was an island staple: chocolate covered macadamia nuts–we’ve been popping these down all week! They are very reasonably priced here on the big island.  I felt terrible missing out on ocean fun yesterday, but with Pip sick it could not be helped. And in a way, the Hawaiian gods were with us as the surf was high and pounding at the beach and was too dangerous yesterday for the Pip and the Tabs to venture in. I am learning bits and pieces about Hawaiian history and it is fascinating: human sacrifices, canoe paddle murders, the introduction of coconut trees to the island. I also discovered that vanilla comes from a beautiful white orchid that only opens for one day a year and must be pollinated by a bee on that day to produce a vanilla bean.
I love the big island. I could easily live here. The ocean is an endless playground. And the sky is so crystal clear at night I can see every star that is out there. Yes, the night sky is as unbelievably beautiful and enchanting a day in the ocean.

I didn’t know that about vanilla beans. No wonder vanilla is so expensive!
